All log furniture is subject to "checking", sometimes mistakenly called cracks. Checking can be small, or sometimes large, splits in the wood and occurs when the wood releases moisture during the natural drying process. Checking does not affect the structural performance or integrity of the wood. The degree of checking will vary from product to product and even from log to log. Checking adds to the uniqueness of log furniture and lends it a rustic appeal that is so very popular with furniture owners.
